We focus on male reproductive pathology, endocrinology and toxicology. Specific interests include testicular growth and development, estrogen regulation of the male reproductive tract, spermatogonial stem cell regulation and ciliary function in the efferent ductules. I enjoy the study of STAGES of spermatogenesis and their utility in the study of testicular pathogenesis. Current collaborative studies are examining the role of membrane estrogen receptor in efferent duct epithelial cells, as well as the function of motile and primary cilia in the physiology of this epithelium.

Rex was born in 1949, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, United States.
In 1967, he graduated from Hickman High School in Columbia, Missouri. Prior to moving to Columbia, he attended elementary education in Arkansas.
Dr. Hess studied Zoology and Science Education for an undergraduate degree. While working full-time in Poultry Research and Electron Microscopy, he completed a Master’s degree in Physiology. He continued working as an Associate in Electron Microscopy at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and then at Mount Sinai Medical School in New York City before deciding to complete a PhD at Clemson University in Animal Physiology. After 3 years of Postdoctoral training in Reproductive and Endocrine Toxicology at the US Environmental Protection Agency, in Research Triangle Park, NC, he began his long career in 1986 as a Professor at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He retired in 2009, but remains active as Professor Emeritus, teaching Cell and Tissue Biology at the Medical School and staying involved in research collaborations on spermatogenesis and efferent ductule physiology.
