LAND: GEOGRAPHY, AND TOPOGRAPHY: Peninsula of Italy"divides itself into three parts: (a) northern, (b) central, and (c) southern. The first (a) comprises the great basin of±the Po; lies between the Alps and Appennines-provinces of Idguria, Gallia, Cisalpina, Venetia; the second (b) made up of Etruria, Latium, Campania, Umbria, Picenum and Samnium, the third (c) consisted of provinces Apulia, Lucania, Calabria and Bruttium. Extreme southern portion, called Magna Graecia,-important Doric colonies. Sicily and her history closely related to that of Italy. The Etruscans occupied ancient Etruria, a section now represented by modern Tuscany and may be aaid to have occupied the territory between the Arno and the Tiber. Contemporaneous with the Etruscans wore the Oscan and Sabellia from whom the Romans sprang, the Greek colonies in Magna Graecia and Sicily and the Gauls north of the Arno.
