The Impact of Globalized Neoliberalism in Latin America: Philosophical Perspectives

For several decades the World Bank and the major industrialized countries, under the banner of free trade, have been exporting capitalism and globalizing corporate power in the alleged interest of increasing prosperity (or reducing poverty) among so-called third-world nations. But, in fact, the poor are getting poorer, and the rich are getting richer in the global marketplace. Consequently, some critics see in this trend elements of a new colonialism or social Darwinism and have challenged the claim that the rising dominance of market economies and their insatiable need for exponential growth actually improves the condition of people or environments in undeveloped countries where they operate. In this anthology, six Latin-American authors examine the theoretical assumptions and principles of neoliberal economics (as advocated by Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman, Julian Simon and others) and discuss the political effect of those assumptions upon human rights, well-being, education, exploitation, and responsibility in the world, primarily in Latin America. (Live interviews of four of the six authors are included on the accompanying DVD.) These essays provide a greater awareness of the plight of many people in Latin America, a deeper understanding of the causes of poverty and cultural exclusion, and some proposed solutions to the problems of global injustice.
