Richard L. Bilsker was born on April 2, 1968, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, United States. He is the son of Jack and Shirley (Pfeifer) Bilsker.
Richard Bilsker graduated from Nova High School in Davie, Florida, in 1985. Then he went to Broward College and received an Associate of Arts degree with honors in general studies in 1987. After that, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from Florida Atlantic University in 1989. In 1994 he got a Doctor of Philosophy degree at Florida State University.
Richard Bilsker, before starting his teaching career, worked as a crew trainer and management trainee in McDonald's in the 1980s and as a shift manager at Peaches Records and Tapes and Spec's Music.
He joined the Community College of Rhode Island in August 1994 as an adjunct instructor, a position he held for one year. In 1996-1998 he was an adjunct instructor at Prince George's Community College and in 1997-2005 an adjunct professor at St. Mary's College of Maryland.
Since August 1995 he has been a professor of philosophy and social science at the College of Southern Maryland. His specialties include the history of philosophy (especially ancient philosophy and philosophy from 1600-1900), history and philosophy of technology and the sciences, social/political/legal philosophy, ethics, and aesthetics.
His teaching interests led him to pursue writing in areas that cross disciplinary boundaries. After learning about the Wadsworth Philosophers Series of books, he inquired as to whether there were any authors he could write about for the series. After the first draft of On Jung, he agreed to do several more books for Wadsworth. As a result, the books On Bergson, On the Philosophy of Technology, and On the Philosophy of Law were published. Bilsker's other books are Four Fundamental Questions: An Introduction to Philosophy and Technology and Society: Classic and Contemporary Readings.
He is also a contributor of articles and reviews to periodicals, including Idealistic Studies. He also reviewed books for publication in journals, as well as wrote pre-publication reviews for textbook publishers.
Quotations:
"I write with the general audience in mind, but I hope to have something to say to people in my field as well."
"I am pleased when friends, colleagues, family members, and students tell me that my writing 'sounds like' me. It is my hope that I can interest people in spending time further exploring the topics I write about."
Richard Bilsker is a member of the American Philosophical Association and American Society for Political and Legal Philosophy.
Richard Bilsker speaks German, French, Spanish, and Greek.
Richard Bilsker married Karen Janowsky on June 17, 1995. The marriage produced one child, Benjamin Adam Janowsky.
