In 1956 Richard got Diploma in Chemistry graduating from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. In 1962 Richard attained Doctor of Science degree.
From 1962 till 1963 Richard was a scientist at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland. Also, from 1968 till 1970 Richard held the post of a privatdozent. Moreover, from 1970 till 1972 he was an assistant professor and from 1973 till 1976 Ernst worked as an associate professor. Since 1976 he started to work as a professor. It is important to note, that from 1963 till 1968 Richard served as a scientist at Varian Associates in Palo Alto, California, United States. Since 1978 he held the post of a consultant and vice president of board of directors at Spectrospin Ag in Fallanden, Switzerland.

On October 9, 1963 Richard married Magdalena Kielholz. The couple has three children: Anna Magdalena, Katharina Elisabeth, Hans-Martin Walter.
