Richard E. Grant’s acting career has included memorable roles in some of Hollywood’s most critically acclaimed films, including Robert Altman’s Gosford Park and Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula. But he attributes his success to his first film role, starring as a flamboyantly pathetic Shakespearean in the underground hit Withnail and I. As Grant explains, "I had no notion that, almost without exception, every film offered since would be the result of playing an alcoholic out-of-work actor."

Here are the very personal diaries of Richard E. Grant's debut behind the camera, as writer and director of his autobiographical movie of the same name. It is both a fascinating insight into the intrigues and agonies he encounters along the way, and also a deeply moving portrait of his childhood and his love affair with Swaziland, where he was born and brought up during the last throes of the British Empire. Through the mayhem - never-ending financial pressures; hostilities, and finally breakdown of communication with his producer; the nerve-racking quest to persuade the King of Swaziland to grant permission to film in his country; the assembly of a stellar cast including Gabriel Byrne, Miranda Richardson, Emily Watson, and Julie Walters - Richard E. Grant has written and reads, with characteristic humour and charm, an extraordinarily honest and revealing account of a labour of love and the realisation of a dream.

Grant’s story begins with the start of his own career when a starring role as a starving, drunken actor in Withnail and I changed his life. The critical success of this him won him the attention of directors and casting agents in both England and America.

Politics
Richard E. Grant doesn't express his political views openly.
Views
Richard E. Grant believes that straight actors should not play gay characters. The Oscar-nominated star is opposed to what he sees as heterosexual performers taking the parts of their homosexual colleagues. He has taken a stance in a growing debate around the legitimacy of actors inhabiting the roles of gay, black or disabled characters without themselves belonging to these groups. He said: "The transgender movement and the #MeToo movement means how can you justify heterosexual actors playing gay characters?" “We are in a historic moment,” the Withnail and I star added. “If you want someone to play a disabled role, that should be a disabled actor."
He is a supporter of many charities including My Million To One.
