(Richard Hughes's celebrated short novel is a masterpiece ...)
Richard Hughes's celebrated short novel is a masterpiece of concentrated narrative. Its dreamlike action begins among the decayed plantation houses and overwhelming natural abundance of late nineteenth-century Jamaica, before moving out onto the high seas, as Hughes tells the story of a group of children thrown upon the mercy of a crew of down-at-the-heel pirates. A tale of seduction and betrayal, of accommodation and manipulation, of weird humor and unforeseen violence, this classic of twentieth-century literature is above all an extraordinary reckoning with the secret reasons and otherworldly realities of childhood.

(The Wooden Shepherdess is the sequel to The Fox in the At...)
The Wooden Shepherdess is the sequel to The Fox in the Attic, and the second volume of Richard Hughes's monumental historical fiction, "The Human Predicament." It opens with Hughes's hero Augustine in prohibition era America, where he is a bemused onlooker and an increasingly fascinated participant in a country intoxicated with sex, violence, and booze. In brilliant cinematic style, the book then moves to Germany, where the Nazi Party is gradually gaining in power; to the slums, mining towns, parliamentary back rooms, and great houses of a Britain teetering on the verge of class war; and to the wilds of the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. The novel ends with a terrifying account of the Night of the Long Knives, as Hitler ruthlessly secures his hold upon Germany. This new edition of the The Wooden Shepherdess concludes with the twelve chapters that Hughes completed of the planned third volume of "The Human Predicament," here published for the first time in America.

Richard Hughes was bom on October 31, 1950, in Los Angeles. Califonia, United States. He is the son of Jackson Edward and Helen (Kaplan) Hughes.
Hughes received his education at California State University. He graduated from it with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1982. He also earned his Master of Education degree at University of Hawaii in 1985.
Hughes started his career as a professor of English as a second language at American Samoa Community College in Pago Pago in 1984. In 2 years he became an instructor in English at Cambria English Institute in Los Angeles. Since 1988, Hughes works as a freelance writer. He also played semi-professional baseball until a shoulder injury forced him to quit.
Hughes is known for his poetry as well as for his novels. His first novel, Isla Grande, set on the Panamanian island, where he lived for a time, saw print in 1994 and caused something of a stir because the book jacket included a quotation from former Panamanian dictator and drug lord Manuel Noriega. Hughes followed this hook with Legends of the Heart in 1997; it is set in American Samoa, where the author once worked as a Professor of English as a second language.
