Richard Leach Maddox was born in 1816 in Bath, England, United Kingdom.
Richard studied medicine in England.
After a world voyage from 1839 to 1940, Maddox settled in Constantinople, Turkey, for several years and practiced medicine. In 1875 he moved to Ajaccio, Corsica, France then to Bordighera, Italy, and later returned to England. Maddox was especially interested in photomicroscopy, having been trained in microscopy as a physician. The discomfort caused him by the use of collodion sparked experiments that led to Maddox's recognition as "the inventor of the first serviceable gelatine silver bromide emulsion" (Eder, History of Photography). He wrote many articles for the British Journal of Photography.
