Marsh began his career as a teaching associate at Hiram College in 1968. Two years later he took a position of a teacher at Hawken School. Then in 1973, Richard was appointed a teaching and research assistant at the University of Michigan, where he worked until 1975. In 1978, he became a lecturer and postdoctoral scholar at the same university. In 1980, Marsh held the same position at the University of California.
In 1982, he served as an assistant professor at Northeastern University. Six years later Richard became an associate professor at that university. Since 1995 he has been a professor at Northeastern University.
Marsh is a member of American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society of Zoologists, American Ornithologists Union, American Physiological Society, Society for Experimental Biology, Cooper Ornithological Society, Sigma Xi and Beta Beta Beta.
On July 1, 1979 Richard Marsh married Judith B. Odenheimer. They have two children.
