Mr. Maxwell was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, United States, on October 15, 1948. He is a son of Richard (a law professor) and Frances (a homemaker; maiden name, McKay) Maxwell.
Richard Maxwell finished University of California at Riverside, earning his Bachelor of Arts on 1970. In 1976 he became a graduate of University of Chicago, from which he obtained Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Mr. Maxwell began his professional career with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. While in Chicago, he became a co-founder and a director of the Cook County Theater Department.
Starting from 1978 he served at Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, IN, working as a professor of English. He has been a contributor of scholarly articles and film reviews to Periodicals, including Comparative Literature, ELH, and Nineteenth-Century Fiction.
A volume of his plays was published by Theater Communications Group in 2004. His music appears in many of his productions and has been recorded on three full-length CD’s. Richard Maxwell has also created two videos, The Darkness of this Reading, and The Feud Other.
In November 2007, Ode to the Man Who Kneels, and in March 2009, People Without History premiered at the Performing Garage in New York.
In March 2010 Mr. Maxwell directed his play Das Mädchen at Theater Bonn in Schauspielhalle. Further performances later in March 2010 were done at Kampnagel, Hamburg, Germany.
In May 2011, Mr. Maxwell created the play Neutral Hero in the context of the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels.
