Joined the Surveying Staff of New Zealand Company, 1843. Assisted to lay out the town of Wanganui. Surveyor to lay out the town and country sections at Dunedin.
Solicitor, 1851; was charged with claim of the late Earl of Shrewsbury and Talbot to the Earldom of Shrewsbury and the estates annexed to the title, which was established in 1869. Director of the Law Fire Insurance Company: contested Hastings Conservative in 1876. Cartulary-register 1886; Clerk of the Peace, Middlesex, 1869; First Clerk of the Peace, London, 1888.
Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. Club: Conservative.
