Richard Harrison Robbins was born on May 19, 1922, in Brooklyn, New York, United States. He was the son of the late David H. and Frances (Frachtman) Robbins.
Robbins earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Brooklyn College in 1946. He continued his education at the State College of Washington, where he earned his Master's degree in Sociology in 1948. He then earned his doctorate at the University of Illinois in 1958.
Robbins started his career as a visiting assistant professor of sociology at Central Michigan University in 1953. The next year, he went to Wellesley College, where he worked as an instructor in anthropology and sociology till 1958. After receiving his doctorate, he started working first as an assistant professor and then as a professor of sociology at Wheaton College, and since 1967, had served at the University of Massachusetts at Boston. He held the position of a professor of sociology at the university until his retirement in 1990 and then was appointed as a professor emeritus.
During his career, Robbins also served as a visiting professor at different universities and colleges, including the University of Strasbourg, Hampton Institute, Harvard University, the University of Leicester, the University of Rhode Island, the University of Maryland at College Park, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central University, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Stonehill College, Wheaton College, and Curry College.
Robbins also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

1996Robbins was a lifelong pacifist and an advocate for civil rights.
Robbins was first married to Leona Riess, with whom he had two children, Genna Robbins Spear and Julia Reed. However, the marriage ended in a divorce. He then married Gillian (Hytch) Robbins. The couple produced two children, Wendy Robbins Skinner and Heidi Ashton Draisey.
