(Fascinating and engaging look at the architecture of the ...)
Fascinating and engaging look at the architecture of the Long Island Rail Road's stations which were designed in the 1800s and early 1900s. The author has reproduced, often from rare glass-negatives, the varied buildings that served not only to welcome people to the LIRR but also as social and economic centers in many small towns and discusses the business and operational considerations that influenced the designs. The development of the myriad styles that emerged during the Victorian era and in the post-Victorian era are presented in logical succession. Illustrated with black and white (and a few color) photos showing the stations, architectural details, and surrounding trackside structures. With decorative end papers showing Islip Station (front) and 1912 map of Long Island with LIRR system (rear). 176 pages with index.
