Richard Randall Jr. was born on January 31, 1926, in Baltimore, Maryland, United States, into the family of Richard Harding and Mary Scott (Buzby) Randall.
After attending Calvert and Gilman Schools in Baltimore, he transferred to Pomfret School in Connecticut in 1942. Immediately following his high school graduation Randall joined the army. Upon returning from the war he enrolled at Princeton University where he earned a bachelor's degree in architecture in 1950. He went on to obtain a master's degree in art history in 1951 from Harvard University.
An expert on medieval art, Randall devoted much of his career to overseeing collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Walters Art Gallery. After receiving degrees from Princeton and Harvard, he started work as an assistant curator at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1953. He eventually became an associate curator of medieval art. In 1959 Randall joined the staff at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts as assistant curator of decorative arts. He moved on to Baltimore’s Walters Art Gallery in 1964 as its assistant director, later serving as director from 1965 to 1981. He served as the Gallery’s curator of medieval art from 1981 until 1985. During his career he also served as an assistant professor at Columbia University and he worked as a member of the furnishing committee to the White House. A member of the Maryland Historical Society, he served on its board of trustees in the mid-1990s. Moreover, he wrote several books.
On April 11, 1953 Randall married Lilian Medical Corps Cramer, with whom he had three common children: Christopher, Julia, and Katherine Randall.
