Richard L. Feigen was born on August 8, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He is a son of Anthony P. and Shirley Bierman Feigen.
In 1952 Richard Feigen received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University. In 1954 he obtained a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard University.
In 1957 Richard Feigen opened his first gallery in Chicago with an exhibition of "Masterpieces of 20th Century German Art." At first, specializing in Expressionism and Surrealism, in 1963 he opened a second gallery in New York, where he started dealing with classics of 19th- and 20th-century art, figures such as van Gogh, Monet, and Picasso.
Between 1965 and 1973, Feigen also directed a contemporary art gallery in SoHo, a part of town that was just starting to bloom. As early as 1966 he showed the work of Joseph Beuys, and in 1970 he organized John Baldessari’s first exhibition. Meanwhile, Feigen has been enamored of Old Masters, especially Italian Mannerism and Baroque painting, as well as French Neo-Classicism and British Romanticism.
The Castelli, Feigen, Corcoran Gallery in New York represented the Estate of Joseph Cornell from 1976 to 1987. Richard L. Feigen & Co. (United Kingdom) presented Old Masters exhibitions in London from 1988 to 1995 and continues to maintain an office there. Richard Feigen is also the author of Tales from the Art Crypt (2000).

On February 23, 1966, Richard Feigen married Sandra Canning Walker Kasper. Later, they divorced. On September 12, 1998, he married Margaret Langan. They also divorced. On May 5, 2007, Feigen married Countess Isabelle Harnoncourt. He had two children from his first marriage: Philippa, Richard.
