(The issues of energy policy can only be fully understood ...)
The issues of energy policy can only be fully understood through the application of fundamental economic principles: this basic premise is confirmed throughout An Economic Analysis of World Energy Problems. The book presents the relevant principles of economic analysis and demonstrates their applicability to questions of policy appraisal and to specific energy policy decisions. The author formulates a general theoretic methodology for the economic analysis of energy-related issues; he therefore avoids introducing data that are overly restricted or limited in scope and stresses policy questions that are likely to be of continuing interest. The book concentrates on the kinds of problems—and potential solutions—that will be of pressing concern for as far as can be seen into the energy future, and the general economic principles that will remain appropriate to an analysis of the problems. This general economic approach allows the author to integrate a great variety of specific matters related to energy. Among the subjects featured in the book are the following: An analysis of the various energy industries as economic entities, including the use of capital investment for exploration and fuel extraction; A consideration, not only of the industries that supply energy, but also of the industries that supply the machinery and equipment, mechanical and electrical, that consume energy; A similarly inclusive consideration of both the countries that supply energy (especially those in OPEC) and the countries that consume it (including Western Europe and the U.S.); Discussions of spatial economics and exhaustion that are not available elsewhere in the literature on energy; A delineation of the considerable impact of transportation costs on the delivered price of energy. Other subjects treated include supply regulation, oil and gas price controls, taxation and land law, conservation, and environmental legislation.

(This book provides a comprehensive study of coal in the e...)
This book provides a comprehensive study of coal in the energy market up until the mid-1980s. It looks at the economics of coal production, the reasons for past decline and the prospects for the industry at the time. The study shows that while much of the loss of market was unlikely to be recovered, coal will have continuing importance - primarily because of remaining competitive in the generation of electricity. This 1987 book looks in detail at the production and consumption trends, the pattern of international trade, the coal market in the major regions, and at how public policy influenced the development of coal. It also looks at different forms of regulation in the coal market - from state regulation of private producers, to direct state intervention and ownership - and their implications. It examines the likely future trends, and draws conclusions for policy towards coal.

(In this examination of the Microsoft antitrust case, Gord...)
In this examination of the Microsoft antitrust case, Gordon critically examines the economics of the US government's arguements. The conclusion is that the government presented a sketchy, incoherent, invalid economic case and relied upon creating the impression of misdeeds to persuade the courts. The primary charge is that Microsoft possessed an impregnable monopoly in operating systems for personal computers. According to the government, Microsoft created, including in its operating system, and vigorously promoted its Internet browser solely to prevent the development of the Java/Netscape alternative. the promotion of the browser was considered predatory. Microsoft allegedly undertook similar acts against other companies. According to Gordon, the government failed to present even a clear statement of its charges and failed to substantiate the critical allegations. In this book he concentrates on the underlying economics of the case and reviews the germane theory. He presents and evaluates implicit government arguements as well as Microsoft's refutations.
