The focus of my research has been the demand for money. Two early studies examined trends in monetary velocity in the United States. More recent work has dealt with the role of monetary growth as a cause of inflation, not only in the United States but in other industrialised countries as well.
Most of this work has involved extensive empirical analysis. Some of it — for example, on the markets for commercial paper and consumer instalment credit — has consisted of fairly detailed examinations of financial institutions. The basic aim of all my research (apart from the 1955 paper on accelerated amortisation) has been to improve our understanding of the way in which monetary policy does its work.
I expect to pursue this aim in the future through further comparative (cross-country) studies of monetary policy.
