Meade, Richard Worsam was born on October 9, 1837 in New York City. Son of Richard Worsam and Clara (Meigs) Meade.


Graduated from the United States Naval Academy, 1856.


Commissioned Lieutenant United States Navy, 1858. Ordnance instructor to receiving ship Ohio, Boston, 1861. Commd lieutenant commander, 1862, in command ship Louisville on Mississippi River, 1862.

Head seamanship department United States Naval Academy, 1865-1868. Commissioned commander, 1868. Prepared Manual of the Boat Exercise of the United States Naval Academy, 1868, A Treatise on Naval Architecture, 1868.

Commissioned captain, 1880. Commandant Washington Navy Yard, 1887-1890. Commissioned commodore, 1892, naval representative at World’s Columbian Exposition, Chicago.

Commissioned rear admiral, 1894, in command N. Atlantic Squadron. Retired, 1895.
