After graduating from Tokyo University (1899) he continued his studies in Europe (1907-09). After returning home he was conferred a doctorate, Sc.D..
Career
He was appointed professor at Tohoku University and shortly after also Dean of Hokkaido University's Faculty of Science. In 1939 he was retired due to age limit and he was afterward appointed president of Osaka University (1942-46).
