Rinsho Sugawara was born in 1712. A descendant of Michizane, he used Kan (a contraction of the name of Sugawara) as his second family name. His father, Soen, was a Shogunate physician.

He studied ancient literature under Sorai Ogyu.
Rinsho Sugawara served the lords of Karasuyama and Shimodate (Tochigi Prefecture). The Shogunate gave him a fief of 200 koku a year as his study fund. He later went to Kyoto and studied under Togai Ito. Died of smallpox.
