Rito Sakurai was born in 1681 in Japan.
A disciple of Ransetsu Hattori, he was given the name of Setchuan from his master.
He was a man of retiring nature. While in bed with illness in his late years, he had all of his works destroyed by fire by Ryota Oshima, one of his disciples. The action was motivated by his envy of Kisen-Hoshi, a noted waka poet, who left no poems of his own to posterity.
