He attended public schools and finished at the Morgan School in Fayetteville, Tennessee.
He was appointed to the office on January 17, 1949 and served until his death in 1952. He graduated from Mountain City Business College in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He served in the army during World War I with the 42nd Infantry Division as a combat logistics regimental sergeant from April 1917 to May 1919.
They had five children.
Robert Allison held accounting and management positions in several private companies including the J. H. Allison & Company meat packers and ice manufacturers, General Motors Corporation, and Nixon Machinery & Supply Company Incorporated all of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
He also served as assistant county auditor and county auditor for Hamilton County and as senior state and county auditor for the comptroller"s office for the State of Tennessee. He was supported for the auditor position in Hamilton County by Estes Kefauver who was a United States. congressman from Tennessee at the time.
