Robert L. Ashcom was born on June 13, 1940, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. He is a son of Robert C. Ashcom and Mary (Lewis) Ashcom, a real estate broker.
Robert studied at Brown University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1962 and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree in 1969.
In 1964, Robert began his career as a teacher of English and assistant director of admissions at a middle school in Kansas City, Missouri, a post he held till 1968. Between 1969 and 1971, he served as a director of admissions at the Wheeler School, Providence, Rhode Island. Also, in the 1960's, Robert taught at a boys’ preparatory school in Kansas City.
During the period from 1974 and 1982, Ashcom acted as a self-employed owner of a thoroughbred horse breeding business in Albemarle County, Virginia. In 1983, Robert started to work as a huntsman and joint-master at Tryon Hounds, Tryon, North Carolina. He remained there until 1994. In 1995, Ashcom was appointed an assistant professor of English at Lord Fairfax Community College, a post he held till 2003.
Moreover, Ashcom served as a lay minister at the Episcopal church.

2002Robert is a member of the Modern Language Association of America, National Council of Teachers of English, Academy of American Poets (associate member) and American Association of University Professors.
Robert married Susan (Wilson) Ashcom, a real estate broker, on July 10, 1963. Their marriage produced two children - Susan R. Ashcom Ricks and Robert L. Jr.
