Cumming earned his BFA (Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, 1965) and MFA (University of Illinois, Champaign, 1967) in painting.
He has taught at the following schools: Hartford Art School, W. Hartford, Connecticut (1978); University of California, Irvine (1977-78); California Institute of the Arts, Valencia (1976-77); Otis Art Institute, Los Angeles (1975-76); University of California, Los Angeles (1974-77); and University of California, Riverside (1973).
