Few persons ever read an author's writing with interest without feeling an intense desire to know something of the local habitation of the mind that thus afforded pleasure to an unknown reader. The human mind can no more conceive of mind without location, than matter can change its form and structural use, without the aid of mind. It is fit and proper that every man, woman, and child should be introduced to those who do not know them by some one who does. This is one of the indispensable amenities of civilized life. The usher who holds that position to Royalty, considers it the post of honor, and himself the favorite of his Sovereign. The door-keeper to a legislative body, who determines on the propriety of time and person, to admit to presence of the body whose custodian he is, holds the post of duty. The person who is selected to preside over a deliberative body is clothed with a double duty, to preserve order and the proprieties of the purpose for which the body is assembled, and is presumed to be capable of faithfully and impartially passing on the public rights of those present--to hear and to be heard. And one of the minor things that a presiding officer is bound to know, is, that when any subject is brought before that body, deemed of sufficient importance to be referred to a Committee of his appointment, that he should select as Chairman one who is favorably disposed to the subject to be passed upon, following the well-known law of nature that the child is not put to an unwilling nurse. On this latter principle, it is to be presumed that the Editor as presiding officer has selected the writer, one of the few remaining nephews who knew, loved, and honored the Rustic Bard in his lifetime. Robert Dinsmoor's poetry is perhaps the greatest achievement of Scotch-Irish writing in the nineteenth century. Robert Dinsmoor was born on October 7, 1757 in Windham, New Hampshire, United States. He was the great-grandson of John Dinsmoor, who came from County Antrim, Ireland, in 1723 and settled in Londonderry , New Hampshire, and the son of William and Elizabeth (Cochran) Dinsmoor. He was born in Windham, grew up on his father’s farm.
Dinsmoor went to such schools as were available in a frontier town, learning to “read, write and cipher tolerably. ”
In 1775 at the age of eighteen Dinsmoor enlisted with the New Hampshire troops under Gen. John Sullivan and took part in the battle of Saratoga.
An edition of Dinsmoor's poems was published in 1828, but it was of unsatisfactory appearance.
Seventy- years later Leonard Allison Morrison made a new compilation and arrangement in a more creditable form: Poems of Robert Dinsmoor, the Rustic Bard (1898). The opening poem is a lengthy narrative of “Jamie Cochran ; the Indian Captive. ”
Most of his verses were composed in the Scotch dialect, still spoken among his neighbors, and they won for him much local popularity.
Dinsmoor found his inspiration in the events and traditions of his neighborhood, local genealogists and historians have found much material of value in his writings, but that his name has survived is due largely to Whittier’s friendship.
The Quaker poet felt that American literature was sadly lacking in the “poetry of home, of nature and the affections, ” and in this “Rustic Bard” he found one who sensed the poetry of common life and in “home-taught, household melody” gave it genuine, if not very competent, expression. Whittier’s essay on ‘‘Robert Dinsmore” (thus he spelled the name) in his collectipn entitled Old Portraits and Modern Sketches (1850) is well worth reading as a tribute to a friend, and for its reflections on native American literature.

Thoroughly convinced of the truth of the Longer and Shorter Catechisms, Dinsmoor was chosen deacon of the local Presbyterian church and was clerk of the session.
Dinsmoor was of massive build, strong- limbed, broad-shouldered, and about five feet ten inches in height.
A man of genial humor, a lover of good food and homely joys, he was widely esteemed for his kindly heart and his unbending integrity.
Dinsmoor was twice married: first he married Mary Park, who died leaving him two sons and nine daughters, and afterward he married Mary Davidson Anderson.
