Appointed China Consular Service, 1858. Retired, and appointed Assistant in Charge of Chinese Library, British Museum, 1865. Keeper of Oriental Printed Books and Manuscripts at the British Museum, 1892-1907.
Retired 1907.; Professor of Chinese, King’s College London (Fellow, 1903 to 1908).
