Tamara Purtova lived in the city of Voronezh in 1966-1977. She graduated from the classical department of the Voronezh Choreographic School (1976), the ballet master department of the State Institute of Theatrical Art named after A.V. Lunacharsky (now Russian Academy of Theatre Arts) (1982).
After graduating Tamara Valentinovna worked as ballet dancer of the Voronezh Opera and Ballet Theater (1976-1977). Then she became a head of the department of choreographic art of the All-Russian Scientific and Methodological Center for Folk Art and Cultural and Educational Work (Moscow, 1982-1990), a leading specialist and an expert of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR (1990-1991). Since 1991, Tamara Valentinovna works as deputy director of the State Russian House of Folk Arts, simultaneous teacher (1993), associate professor (1999), professor (2007) of the Department of Choreography and Ballet Studies, Makovskaya State Academy of Choreography.
Tamara Valentinovna is the author of many scientific works on the history and pedagogy of folk dance, including the textbook "Teach children to dance" (Moscow, 2004) and the monograph "Dance on the amateur stage. XX century: achievements and problems" (Moscow, 2006).
