Robert Nigel Gildea

Background

Robert Nigel Gildea was born on September 12, 1952 in Egham, Surrey, United Kingdom. Son of Denis and Hazel Gildea.

Education

He received a B.A. and M.A. in 1974 from Merton College, Oxford. From 1974 until 1976 he attended St Antony's College, Oxford and in 1978 he earned a D.Phil. His D.Phil research was in French provincial education. His doctoral advisor was Theodore Zeldin.

Career

He was a lecturer at King's College, London. Then he was appointed Fellow in Modern History at Merton in 1979. He was elevated to the position of Professor of Modern History from being Professor of Modern French History in September 2006, and is currently a Fellow of Worcester College.

Achievements

• For his 2002 book "Marianne in Chains" Gildea won the prestigious Wolfson History Prize.
