He received a B.A. and M.A. in 1974 from Merton College, Oxford. From 1974 until 1976 he attended St Antony's College, Oxford and in 1978 he earned a D.Phil. His D.Phil research was in French provincial education. His doctoral advisor was Theodore Zeldin.
He was a lecturer at King's College, London. Then he was appointed Fellow in Modern History at Merton in 1979. He was elevated to the position of Professor of Modern History from being Professor of Modern French History in September 2006, and is currently a Fellow of Worcester College.
He is fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
He married Lucy-Jean Lloyd on March 21, 1987. Gildea and his wife live in Oxford with their 4 children (Rachel, Georgia, William and one more child).
