Robert Samuel Gwynn was born on May 13, 1948 in Eden, North Carolina, United States. His parents were Dallas Edmund Gwynn, a sales manager, and Thelma (Howe) Gwynn.
Robert Samuel Gwynn received a Bachelor of Arts from Davidson College in 1969, and he earned both a Master of Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Arkansas in 1973.
Robert Samuel Gwynn is the author of several collections of poetry, including "No Word of Farewell: Selected Poems 1970-2000" and "The Narcissiad" (1981). His first full-length book was "The Drive-in" (1986).
Gwynn is the editor of "Poetry: A Pocket Anthology" (2001) and "New Expansive Poetry: Theory, Criticism, History" (1999). He has also edited two volumes of the Dictionary of Literary Biography. His poetry has been featured in many anthologies and textbooks, including "The Book of Forms" (2000), "The Made Thing: An Anthology of Contemporary Southern Poetry" (2nd edition, 1999), and "Rebel Angels: 25 Poets of the New Formalism" (1996).
Additionally, Robert Samuel Gwynn was an instructor in English at Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos from 1973 to 1976. He has also taught at Lamar University since 1976.
In September, 2015, Gwynn was appointed Program Director of the West Chester University Poetry Conference. Currently, he lives in Beaumont, Texas.
