From 1837 to 1839 Hayne was president of the Louisville, United States Senator Robert Young Hayne (1791-1839), lawyer and legislator. His chief interests as senator were free to trade and states' rights.
In 1812 was admitted to the bar. He served in the War of 1812. In 1814 the Democratic-Republicans of Charleston elected him to the South Carolina legislature. In 1819 Hayne became attorney general of the state and was elected to the United States Senate in December 1822. In 1832 Hayne was chairman of the convention at Columbus.
