He was second (and oldest surviving) son of Alexander Hyde, who was Bishop of Salisbury from 1665 to 1667.

He was educated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford and then at the Middle Temple, where he was called to the bar in 1673. He was a Member (Member of Parliament) of the Parliament of England for Hindon 1677-1679, 1685-1687, 1689-1698, and Wiltshire 1702-1707. He then sat in the Parliament of Great Britain as Member of Parliament for Wiltshire from 1707 to 1722.
