Robert Ravenelle Jay

Robert Jay was born on March 22, 1925, in New York City, New York, United States. He is a son of William Henry and Georgia May (Ravenelle) Jay.

Education

Robert Jay studied at Harvard University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949, a Master of Arts degree in 1953 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1957.

Career

Robert Jay started his career as an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in 1952. He held this post until 1967. Later he started to work as a professor of anthropology at Brown University. Robert Jay published his first book, Religion and Politics in Rural Central Java, in 1962. He also wrote Javanese Villagers: Social Relations in Rural Modjokuto, that was published in 1969.
