Robert Neil Sandberg graduated from Upper Darby High School. In 1970 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University. In 1973 Sandberg obtained a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Wesleyan University. In 1977 he gained a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Yale School of Drama.
From 1978 to 1987 Robert Neil Sandberg was a member of theater faculty at Cornish College of the Arts, a department head from 1987 to 1995. From 1991 to 1994 he was a dramaturge at Seattle Children's Theater. In 1995 he was appointed a lecturer in theater at Princeton University.
His plays are published by Dramatic Publishing and Playscripts and include Anne of Green Gables, Convivencia, Done, Frankenstein, Good-bye Dolly, In Between, IRL (in real life), Jarpteetza/The Firebird, A Little Princess, Martina: Lost and Found, The Moonstone, The Odyssey, Roundelay, Sara Crewe and What Can't Be Seen. Theaters that have presented his work include The Barrow Group, Barter Theatre, Dallas Children’s Theater, Fulton Opera House, Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Indiana Rep, Intiman Theatre, Kitchen Dog, La Mama, New York Music Theatre Festival, Open Eye, Providence Black Rep, Seattle Rep, Stage One: Louisville’s Children Theatre, Stages Repertory Theatre and Yale Cabaret.
He has been commissioned by theatres such as The 52nd Street Project, George Street Playhouse, McCarter Theatre, Metro Theater Company, Open Door, Passage Theatre, and, on three occasions, Seattle Children’s Theatre.
