In the 1960s Yin obtained his Bachelor in history from Harvard College, and took his graduate studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in brain and cognitive sciences.

After his graduation Yin published his first articles in the field of experimental psychology and neuroscience. In the 1970s he focussed his research interests on sociological methods and research, and particularly case study research in cooperation with Eveleen Bingham, Karen A. Heald, and Ingrid Heinsohn. In 1980 Yin founded COSMOS Corporation and developed this into a research corporation for "applied research and evaluation, technical support, and management assistance aimed at improving public policy, private enterprise, and collaborative ventures." Yin has also been affiliated with the University of Copenhagen, the United Nations Development Programme and is scholar-in-residence at American University.
