Buchanan, Robert Christie was born on March 1, 1811 in Baltimore. Son of Andrew and Carolina (Johnson) Buchanan.

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1829.

Career

Commissioned Second lieutenant 4th Infantry, United States Army, 1830. Served in Black Hawk War, 1832. Adjunct of his regiment, 1835-1838.

Commissioned First lieutenant, 1836. Served in Seminole War. Commissioned captain, 1838.

Brevetted major during Mexican War, 1846, lieutenant colonel, 1847. Commissioned major United States Army, 1855, lieutenant colonel, 1861. Brevetted colonel for action at Battle of Gaine’s Mill.

Commissioned brigadier general United States Volunteers, 1862, colonel, 1863. Brevetted brigadier general, 1865. Fought at battles of Antietam, 2d Bull Run, Fredericksburg during Civil War.

Member Iowa Claims Commission, 1867. Assistant commissioner Freedman’s Bureau, 1868. Commander Department of Louisiana, 1868.
