(Providing a myriad of viewpoints that look at the world t...)
Providing a myriad of viewpoints that look at the world through a filter of irony, incongruity, satire, parody, nonsense, and truth, this guide focuses on people - the tourist, the maitre d', the throngs that pass by your cafe. Full, but not stuffed, with stories, memoirs, character sketches, descriptions, light verse, drawings, and cartoons. Preparations and arrival, the sights and the haute cuisine, gambling, mountain climbing, and speaking French, even coming home and telling the neighbors, it's all here.

(Sandra Ives visits her home town for the first time since...)
Sandra Ives visits her home town for the first time since a "falling out" with her much older brother, Thomas, twenty-seven years before. Each chapter involves an encounter with people – some she knew, most she didn't – who treat Sandra solely as her brother’s sister. These encounters give her (and readers) a lively, sometimes comical picture of the town’s political machine and her brother’s central role in it as City Attorney. Then she encounters her brother Thomas himself. The encounters are more Alice in Wonderland than the excavation of family secrets. The novel is aesthetically original, while very readable, full of distinctive characters, uncommon tales, and ethical concerns.
