Gardiner, Robert Hallowell was born on February 10, 1782 in Bristol, England. Son of Robert and Hannah (Gardiner) H.

Education

Graduated from Harvard, 1801.

Career

Inherited large estate on Kennebec River (Maine) at age of 5 from maternal grandmother. Moved to Boston, 1792. Conceived, initiated founding Gardiner Lyceum, 1821-1832 (forerunner of America agricultural and technical schools), probably 1st institution of kind to receive public money from a state legislature, but financial problems caused closing, 1832.

Active in missionary, education work Protestant Episcopal Church. Founded a Sunday school, Gardiner, Maine. Member Maine House of Representatives, 1822.

Overseer Bowdoin College, 1811-1841, trustee, 1841-1860. President Maine History Society, 1846-1855.
