Inherited large estate on Kennebec River (Maine) at age of 5 from maternal grandmother. Moved to Boston, 1792. Conceived, initiated founding Gardiner Lyceum, 1821-1832 (forerunner of America agricultural and technical schools), probably 1st institution of kind to receive public money from a state legislature, but financial problems caused closing, 1832.
Active in missionary, education work Protestant Episcopal Church.
Founded a Sunday school, Gardiner, Maine. Member Maine House of Representatives, 1822.
Overseer Bowdoin College, 1811-1841, trustee, 1841-1860. President Maine History Society, 1846-1855.
