Background
Sherrod, Robert Lee was born on February 8, 1909 in Thomas County, Georgia, United States. Son of Joseph Arnold and Victoria Ellen (Evers).
( In the summer of 1943, at the height of World War II, b...)
In the summer of 1943, at the height of World War II, battles were exploding all throughout the Pacific theater. In mid-November of that year, the United States waged a bloody campaign on Betio Island in the Tarawa Atoll, the most heavily fortified Japanese territory in the entire Pacific. They were fighting to wrest control of the island to stage the next big push toward Japan—and one journalist was there to chronicle the horror. Dive into war correspondent Robert Sherrod’s battlefield account as he goes ashore with the assault troops of the U.S. Marines 2nd Marine Division in Tarawa. Follow the story of the U.S. Army 27th Infantry Division as nearly 35,000 troops take on less than 5,000 Japanese defenders in one of the most savage engagements of the war. By the end of the battle, only seventeen Japanese soldiers were still alive. This story, a must for any history buff, tells the ins and outs of life alongside the U.S. Marines in this lesser-known battle of World War II. The battle itself carried on for three days, but Sherrod, a dedicated journalist, remained in Tarawa until the very end, and through his writing, shares every detail.

(From Foreword: "It is not too strong a statement to say t...)
From Foreword: "It is not too strong a statement to say that Marine Corps aviation came of age in World War II. We are fortunate that the distinguished journalist-historian Robert Sherrod has detailed the process by which it came of age in his History of Marine Corps Aviation in World War II. Originally published in 1952 by the Combat Forces Press, the book has long been out of print....Readers will find it a highly concentrated work. An examination of the table of contents will reveal the organization of the book: two introductory chapters carrying Marine aviation from its beginning up to World War II, then a chapter-by-chapter narrative account through the war, followed by a carefully researched set of appendices. The last of these appendices is a tour de force in itself, a compilation of thumbnail histories of virtually all Marine squadrons and other Marine aviation units involved in the war. The book can be read as a rousing war story. It can also be read as a case study of the evolution of organization and doctrine. It is all here, including the diversions, digressions, and sometimes maldeployments from the main purpose of Marine aviation - to serve as the air element of an integrated air-ground team...."

(Robert Sherrod's History of Marine Corps Aviation in Worl...)
Robert Sherrod's History of Marine Corps Aviation in World War II is one of the best-documented books on World War II. Because of its significance in the military history of this century and author's matchless style, it is truly a Great War story. Sherrod writes both from personal experience as a Time/Life correspondent during WWII and from careful archival research with Marine War Diaries, Unit histories, and Muster Rolls. A basic history of each Marine Fighter Squadron is in the index, but it is the fascinating history of the air war that holds special appeal to most readers.

( From Thomas Jefferson’s birth in 1743 to the California...)
From Thomas Jefferson’s birth in 1743 to the California Gold Rush in 1849, America’s westward expansion comes to life in the hands of a writer fascinated by the way individual lives link up, illuminate one another, and collectively impact history. Jefferson, a naturalist and visionary, dreamed that the United States would stretch across the North American continent, from ocean to ocean. The account of how that dream became reality unfolds in the stories of Jefferson and nine other Americans whose adventurous spirits and lust for land pushed the westward boundaries: Andrew Jackson, John “Johnny Appleseed” Chapman, David Crockett, Sam Houston, James K. Polk, Winfield Scott, Kit Carson, Nicholas Trist, and John Quincy Adams. Their stories—and those of the nameless thousands who risked their lives to settle on the frontier, displacing thou- sands of Native Americans—form an extraordinary chapter in American history that led directly to the cataclysm of the Civil War. Filled with illustrations, portraits, maps, battle plans, notes, and time lines, Lions of the West is a richly authoritative biography of America—its ideals, its promise, its romance, and its destiny.

(This official NASA history document - converted for accur...)
This official NASA history document - converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction - is an enthralling compilation of first-hand accounts and essays from the leading figures of the Apollo program: astronauts (Aldrin, Collins, Schmitt, Conrad, Shepard, Lovell) along with managers and engineers (Seamans, Webb, Gilruth, von Braun, Low, Petrone, Kraft, Phillips, Mueller). The editor's note states: "In planning this history we set out to record the story of Apollo before the colors fade and memories blur. At first we aimed to restrict ourselves to the actual expeditions to the Moon. But it soon became clear that this approach could not capture the scope and spirit of so far-reaching an enterprise. So we decided that the breadth of Apollo would be shown best from the differing perspectives of the people directly concerned. Each chapter author was encouraged to recount his part of the story as he remembered it. We refrained from homogenizing these contributions, although we recognized that they are necessarily personalized and slightly duplicative. But they do offer the viewpoints of some of the people who made Apollo happen, and thus may provide fresh insights into that incredible project." Contents include: Foreword * JAMES C. FLETCHER / Introduction * ROBERT C. SEAMANS, JR. / Chapter 1 A Perspective on Apollo - The forces that set us on the path to the Moon * JAMES E. WEBB / Chapter 2 "I Believe We Should Go to the Moon" - Engineering what had never been done before * ROBERT R. GILRUTH / Chapter 3 Saturn the Giant - Building the boosters to send men beyond Earth * WERNHER VON BRAUN / Chapter 4 The Spaceships - Building the first craft to cross an ocean of space * GEORGE M. LOW / Chapter 5 Scouting the Moon - Mechanical explorers went before human ones * EDGAR M. CORTRIGHT / Chapter 6 The Cape - The new shipyard of space created for Apollo - ROCCO A. PETRONE / Chapter 7 "This is Mission Control" - How men on Earth aided men in space * CHRISTOPHER C. KRAFT, JR. / Chapter 8 Men for the Moon - How they were chosen and trained * ROBERT SHERROD / Chapter 9 The Shakedown Cruises - Bold steps preceded 'one small step' * SAMUEL C. PHILLIPS / Chapter 10 Getting It All Together - Critical tests of the total system * GEORGE E. MUELLER / Chapter 11 "The Eagle Has Landed" - A goal attained, men on the Moon - MICHAEL COLLINS and EDWIN E. ALDRIN, JR. / Chapter 12 Ocean of Storms and Fra Mauro - Exploring on foot, emplacing automatic laboratories * CHARLES CONRAD, JR. and ALAN B. SHEPARD, JR. / Chapter 13 "Houston, We've Had a Problem" - A crippled bird limps safely home * JAMES A. LOVELL / Chapter 14 The Great Voyages of Exploration - Scientific expeditions return a rich harvest * HARRISON H. SCHMITT / Chapter 15 The Legacy of Apollo - New understanding of ourselves and our world * HOMER E. NEWELL

In part III, the authors focus on two major classes of situational factors that influence behavior: competition and cooperation, and feedback and reinforcement. Part IV focuses on group interaction and processes, while part V discusses how psychological techniques may be used to help people perform more effectively. Part VI addresses the various roles psychological factors play in health and exercise.
