Robert Lyle Friedheim got a Bachelor of Arts degree at Columbia College in 1955. In 1957 he became a Master of Arts at Columbia University. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in political science from the University of Washington in 1962, writing his dissertation on maritime law.
Friedheim started his career as a teaching assistant, a predoctoral associate at the University of Washington, 1958-1961. Later he was an assistant professor and associate professor political science at Purdue University (1961-1966). He worked as a director law of sea project, a professional staff member at the Center for Naval Analysis, in Arlington, Virginia, in 1966-1976.
Since 1976 he was a professor of international relations at the University of Southern California at Los Angeles who also served as director of the Sea Grant program there from 1980 to 1989. A researcher and later director of the Law of the Sea Project, Friedheim was in part responsible for the development of the United Nations international seas treaty. He authored a number of books surrounding international marine policy and relations; his Offshore Boundaries and Zones was published in 1967. Navy and the Common Sea came next in 1972 and was followed by the Forecasting Outcome of Multilateral Negotiations. Some of his later works include the 1977 Law of the Sea and Whaling Issue in U.S.- Japanese Relations, published in 1978. Friedheim earned several grants, including the 1978 Office of Naval Research grant.
He worked as a professor of international relations, associate director institute for marine studies, University of Southern California, (1976-1989); director sea grant program at University of Southern California (1980-1989); director school international relations at the University of Southern California (1992-1996). He was also an advisor United States Arctic Research Commission, 1986-1996. Lecturer, invited visitor National Bureau Oceanography, Beijing, 1984. Member of advisory group Ocean Policy Roundtable, Woods Hole, 1983.
