(Early on the morning of November 5, 1871, seven passenger...)
Early on the morning of November 5, 1871, seven passengers continued on their journey toward Ehrenberg, Arizona Territory. One hour west of Wickenburg their stagecoach was attacked. The driver and five men were murdered. A seventh man and the only female passenger escaped, though severely wounded. Sixteen hours later a rescue party recovered the bodies of five victims 'drenched in blood, rigid in death'. A pursuit posse followed closely behind and the following day the Army's investigation began. The result of that inquiry presaged a campaign that would punish the guilty and alter the fate of nearly every Indian in America's southwest.

During the 1800s trains carried the nation's wealth throughout the east, but no one thought to rob a speeding train until 1866. In 1870 the first western train was robbed in Nevada and within hours a second train was robbed. Railroads made every alteration to their cars and changed every procedure they could imagine to thwart the robbers, but to no avail. Robbing trains became epidemic over the next five decades, even when the legislatures made train robbery a capital crime. A few of the hundreds of train robberies stand out as thrilling and dangerous affairs, and the greatest of these (15-20) are included in this book.

(Wells, Fargo's detectives James B. Hume and John N. Thack...)
Wells, Fargo's detectives James B. Hume and John N. Thacker compiled a report of company losses between 1870 and 1884, but the report had another purpose. Within the pages, listing the exploits of 206 road agents, was a detailed physical description of each thus creating a textual mug book of potential recidivist robbers likely to victimize the company again. The report contained no details of the thrilling events which earned each robber a place in the report, but this work is intended to correct that shortcoming by giving all the details of over 400 stagecoach and train robberies, and a few burglaries, committed in half a dozen western states and territories.

On January 1, 1885, Wells, Fargo & Company's chief detective James B. Hume and special agent John N. Thacker published a report summarizing the company's losses during the previous 14 years. It listed 313 stagecoach robberies, 23 burglaries, and four train robberies but included little or no details of the events themselves, focusing instead on physical descriptions of the robbers. Widely circulated, the report was intended to assist law enforcement in identifying and apprehending the criminals believed still to present a danger to the company. The present volume revisits each crime, updating Hume and Thacker's original report with rich new details culled from local newspapers, personal diary entries, and court records.

In 1805 river pirates were stealing girls on the upper Mississippi River and selling them to New Orleans' brothels at auctions held in lower Natchez, or Natchez-under-the-Hill. Carlos White, a newcomer to Natchez, was outraged by the practice and vowed to put an end to the abductions and the auctions. He tried to end them through an anti-vice newspaper campaign, but when that failed he realized that his only recourse was to remove the leadership of the pirate gang. Over a period of two months all but one river pirate leader met a mysterious end and the last, to save his life, confessed to an abduction and recieved a long prison term.

(California was the mining center of the West for half a c...)
California was the mining center of the West for half a century. Wherever precious minerals were found, road agents appeared to "mine the roads" of treasure being shipped out and payrolls being shipped in. The first recorded robbery of a stagecoach occurred in 1856, and the last in 1913. Over that period there were 458 stagecoach robberies, many with special characteristics such as a claim the robbers were Confederate soldiers, a murder, a gun battle, or a thrilling pursuit and capture. Surprisingly, there were many robberies in which the perpetrator remained unknown or in which was so little stolen the robber was not even sought out. This book gives all the details of those robberies taken from the contemporary newspapers and from a variety of other sources.

Robert Michael Wilson, after 24 years of service with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, retired in 1992. He began researching and writing in earnest and his first fictional work was published in 1996. However history was his first love, particularly crime and punishment, and in 1998 he began researching massacres, stagecoach and train robberies, legal and extra-legal executions, and prisons of the old west. Five articles have been published in Wild West Magazine and he has been featured in radio interviews, on the History Channel's "Wild West Tech" series, and was recently interviewed for Warner Bros.' release of the remastered "Mad Max" movie DVD. He is an active member of Western Writers of America and the Wild West History Association. He continues to search for those exceptional cases of "history lost" and makes every effort to document them as far as the existing record will allow.
