Glesener was born on October 7, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois, United States; the son of Richard Frederick Glesener and June Koletsos Glesener.
Glesener received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland in 1969. Two years later he earned his Master of Science degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1978 from the University of Michigan.
Glesener began his career as an assistant professor at Brevard College in 1979. Seven years later he took the position of an associate professor at the same college. Since 2005 Robert was an associate professor emeritus at Brevard College. Also he was a director and founder of the Brevard White Squirrel Institute.
Glesener was a member of North Carolina Academy of Sciences.
On May 31, 1969 Robert Glesener married Judith Marie Glesener, with whom he divorced in 1994. They have two daughters. On January 27, 1995 he married Jennie T. Glesener. They have a son.
