Robert received his B.A. (cum laude) from Davidson College in 1970. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Economics from the University of North Carolina in 1980.
Robert worked as an instructor in economics at St. John's University, Collegeville, Minnesota, from 1975 until 1978. Then he was a fulbright lecturer at Rafael Landívar University in Guatemala City, Guatemala in 1979. Between 1981 and 1982 he was a visiting assistant professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Gottfried was a faculty research participant at Oak Ridge Associate Universities and at the Center for Energy & Environment Research, San Juan, in 1983. Thereafter he worked as an assistant professor at the University of the South, Sewanee, TN, from 1982 till 1985, the as a professor of economics since 1985. Between 1991 and 1994 Gottfried headed the Social Science Foreign Language Program, became department head in 1994. From 1995 until 1996 he was a researcher for Central American Commission on Forests and the Environment.
Robert is a member of the International Society for Ecological Economics, International Society of Tropical Foresters, Association of Environmental and Resource Econo¬mists, Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Epsilon, Sigma Delta Pi.
Robert married Yolande McCurdy, on 22 November, 1975. The couple has 2 children: Alicia Anne, Jeremy Richard.
