Robert received Bachelor of Electrical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1957. Then he earned Master of Science at New York University in 1959, and Doctor of Philosophy at University of Colorado in 1962.
Robert S. Wyer Jr. is a visiting professor at the University of Cincinnati and Professor (Emeritus) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. During that time, he began to develop a full-fledged social-cognitive perspective on topics such as attitudes, attribution, and impression formation. After his graduation, he took a job at Bell Labs. On completion of his doctoral studies, Wyer held academic appointments at the University of Iowa and the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle.
Dr. Wyer is the author or coauthor of four books, the most recent being "Social Comprehension and Judgment." He is the editor of several others including the "Handbook of social cognition, the Advances in social cognition series" and "Understanding culture: Theory, research and application." He has published numerous journal articles and book chapters and was recently cited as having published the greatest number of articles in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in the 30 years since its inception.
In 1960, Robert married his first wife Joan M., but they divorced. Then he married Darlene Goodhart, but she died in 1995. Finally, he married a marketing researcher Rashmi Adaval. He is the father of two daughters, Kathryn L. and Natalie A.
