Secretary of American Copyright League. In 1889-1891 secretary of joint committee representing the united associations which achieved International Copyright. Chevalier of the L6gion d’Honneur (1891).
Cavaliere of the Order of the Crown of Italy (1895). Originator of Yosemite National Park. Member and (1901-1909) Secretary National Institute of Arts and Letters.
Preliminary Secretary, and now Member and Permanent Secretary, American Academy of Arts and Letters. Member, Phi Beta Kappa Society. Originator of the i Keats-Shelley Memorial in Rome, and Secretary American Commander.
Honourable Memorandum and Honourable Vice-1 President Sierra Club. Proposed to President Roosevelt, 1906, that he should call a conference of the Governors of the Eastern States on the conservation of their forests, which was the origin of the White House Conference on Conservation. In campaign for new American Copyright Law, 1909, advocated decisively the abolition of the manufacturing provision on books in foreign languages. Editor of The Century Magazine since 1909(; Associate Editor, 1881, and member of its editorial staff since 1873.
