Empire of Liberty takes a new look at the public life, thought, and ambiguous legacy of one of America's most revered statesmen, offering new insight into the meaning of Jefferson in the American experience. This work examines Jefferson's legacy for American foreign policy in the light of several critical themes which continue to be highly significant today: the struggle between isolationists and interventionists, the historic ambivalence over the nation's role as a crusader for liberty, and the relationship between democracy and peace. Written by two distinguished scholars, this book provides invaluable insight into the classic ideas of American diplomacy.

( The Fall of the First British Empire takes an often co...)
The Fall of the First British Empire takes an often controversial view of British imperial policy in the age of the American Revolution, one that challenges long-held assumptions about the causes of America's war for independence. In dealing with the origins of the conflict that led to Britain's loss of America, Robert W. Tucker and David C. Hendrickson place considerable emphasis on the relationship between the Seven Years' War and the difficulties between Britain and America in its immediate aftermath. They also examine the nature of the imperial-colonial relationship as it existed in 1763, challenging the widespread view that there was a well-defined status quo and that a new view of empire led the British to oppose it. In addition, they similarly question conventional accounts of British policy from the Stamp Act crisis to the decision for war in 1775.

The focus of this essay is restricted to the central themes of the radical critique. In consequence, there are some aspects of this critique that are only touched upon and other aspects that are omitted entirely. The radical indictment of American diplomacy, past and present, is a very detailed one. To deal with it in anything resembling a thorough manner would require a very large volume. Even to examine the many issues radical historiography raises with respect to the origins of the cold war would prove a formidable and certainly a lengthy task. Within the compass of an essay, selectivity is unavoidable. This essay is restricted in yet another sense. It makes no attempt to examine the variety of expressions by which radical opposition to American foreign policy has been manifested in recent years. It is not an analysis of a political movement but of the thought that has partially informed a movement.
