Goddu began his career as a merchandise administrator of LaSalle and Koch division at R. H. Macy & Company in 1970. Five years later he took a position of a vice president and general merchandise manager at Lazarus Department Stores. Then in 1980, Roger became a merchandise manager and a vice president in 1983 of Dayton Hudson division at Target Stores (nowadays Target Corporation). In 1985, he was appointed a senior vice president and general merchandise manager at the same corporation.
Also Roger served as an executive vice president and general merchandise manager at Toys "R" Us from 1989 to 1995. In 1996, he became a president of United States Merchandising at Toys "R" Us. Also in 1997, Goddu held a position of a chief executive officer and chairman of Montgomery Ward & Company, Inc., where he served until 2000.
Since 2002, he was a director of Digital Think Inc. In addition, since 2002, Roger worked as an operating advisor and a portfolio company director at Brentwood Associates, Inc. Nowadays he is a partner of Brentwood Associates, Inc. Goddu is also an operating executive of TriArtisan Capital Advisors LLC.
Goddu is a member of the Chicago Executives Club and Founders Council of the Chicago Field Museum. Also he was a member of the Executive Advisory Board of Hilco Equity Partners.
