From 1964 to 1969 Roger apprenticed in photography at the Associated Students of the University of California Studio on the Berkeley campus in Berkeley, California, United States. In 1969 Roger earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of California in Berkeley, California, United States.
Roger directed the ASUC Studio from 1970 to 1975. He participated in two NEA-sponsored photo surveys, the first for MALDEF and another for the Oakland Museum in 1979. From 1977 to 1979 he was a photographer for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund's Photo Survey.
Using small or large format, Minick works in an interpretive, documentary mode, often emphasizing people, their landscape and life-style. His later work has been more urban than rural and more personal in nature.
