Mr. Peterson was born on August 28, 1908, in Jamestown, New York, United States. He was a son of Charles Gustav and Henrietta (Bader) Peterson.
Roger Peterson studied drawing from life at the New York City Art Student’s League and the National Academy of Design.
Mr. Peterson worked as a writer and artist. In a career stretching for more than sixty years, he wrote, illustrated, and edited nearly fifty books that helped change the way people watched birds.
Roger Peterson trained as an artist rather than a scientist. While Peterson was working as an art and science instructor at the Rivers School in Brookline, Massachusetts, an editor at Audubon magazine suggested that he publish his bird artwork in a pocketsized volume. Houghton-Mifflin published A Field Guide to the Birds in 1934. The book has gone through four revisions — Mr. Peterson was working on a fifth when he died — and has sold more than three million copies in the sixty years since it was first released.
He also edited or co-edited many other "Field Guides" to such diverse subjects as rocks, shells, butterflies, mammals, and wildflowers.
