Roger Taylor received a Diploma in Creative Photography, 1st Class, from Derby College of Art (1967) and a Master of Arts in Victorian Studies from the University of Leicester, England (1977).
Since 1968 Roger Taylor has been a senior lecturer in Photographic Studies at Sheffield City Polytechnic. He taught at Derby College of Art in 1966 and worked for commercial photographer Rex Lowden (1958-1966). Roger Taylor has been chairman of the Photographic Advisory Committee, Yorkshire Arts Association, since 1979. He has also compiled microfilm publications on the Royal Collection photographs at Windsor Castle and the photography archives of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
