Binks specialized in fine arts at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he earned a BFA in 1956, and studied at the Yale School of Design under Herbert Matter, completing an MFA in 1960.
For fourteen years Binks taught at the Rhode Island School of Design, and since 1976 he has been the director of the Division of Art & Design at the University of Texas in San Antonio.
In 1968 he established the Department of Film Making at the Rhode Island School of Design.
The artist used a large-format camera and concentrated on “straight photography, landscapes and environmental portraits."
Binks is a member of SPE and the CAA.
